I have been doing research in the original English parish records for Woodburys. The following English parish records (at the end) may very well be for our earliest American Woodbury. I believe that the 1607 marriage for John Woodberye and Johan Bishopp may be the marriage that produced Humfrey Woodbury. Many people have jumped to the conclusion that the Joanne Humphrey marriage (which is far too early), but we all know there is no connecting record. Humphrey's own deposition says that he was from Somerset, not Devon. The most common name for male Woodburys in England was JOHN so there are far too many John Woodbury marriages. My best guess from all records is that our John Woodbury was born about 1583 in Somerset county, England. Mrs. Lora A. Underhill agreed in her "Woodbury Genealogy: Descendants of John and William of England and Massachusetts" "WOODBURY, JOHN 1, b. in England about (1579 in somersetshire.)" Charles Kemble Woodberry also agreed in his "Genealogy of the William Woodberry Family in the United States of America" "Brother John (1) came from Somersetshire England 1624, settled at Cape Ann under the direction of the Dorchester Co." Robert Charles Anderson also agrees in his "The Great Migration Begins" JOHN WOODBURY BIRTH: By about 1583 based on estimated date of first marriage. "A John Woodbury married Joanna Humphrey on 21 June 1596 at Burlescombe, Devonshire, and this has been thought to be a marriage of the immigrant, and also an explanation for the given name of his first son. But this wife was buried on 5 June 1601, and so, unless Humphrey Woodbury grossly underestimated his own age in his depositon of 1680, Joanna (Humphrey) Woodbury cannot be his mother. In any case, this marriage seems much too early for the immigrant [Dawes-Gates 2:825]. Raymon Meyers Tingley gave a name and exact date for the second marriage of John Woodbury [Tingley-Meyers 450], but as with all items attributable only to this author, we should meet these data with extreme skepticism. The mother of Humphrey Woodbury was certainly not the mother of the rest of John Woodbury's children. But did the immigrant have two wives or three? The last three children of John Woodbury were born in a span of four years, from 1636 to 1640, but his son John, to be married by 1654, must have been born some years before 1636. Two scenarios come to mind. First, John Woodbury may have had two wives in addition to the mother of Humphrey, a second wife (whom he may have married while in England in 1627 and 1628) who was the mother of John and a third wife (Agnes or Anne) who was the mother of the last three children. Second, given the approximate date of birth for the son John, it may be that the immigrant John Woodbury, on his return trip to England in late 1627 and early 1628, married a second time, to Agnes, impregnated this second wife, and returned to New England without her. She would then have come to Salem some years later and begun having children again in 1636."
