Hello Sterlyn,
Thank you for your email. It helped to know there are still people out there who are still working on the Wood family from the Montgomer/Floyd/Franklin area.My work has shown that many of the Wood researchers rely too much on the book called "Floyd County: A history of its people and places", by Dr. Amos Wood. The book is very helpful & mostly accurate. However, he was wrong about the ancestors before John, Sr., the father of the John who married Lydia Bryant.Dr. Wood, who died in 1937, by the way, says that Stephen Wood b. abt 1720, was John, Sr's father and therefore Richard "Dickie" Wood's grandfather. That is not correct. In fact, Stephen Wood, b. 1720, is not even in our line.Back in the early 1930's Dr. Wood wrote to the county clerk of Bedford Co., VA and asked for a search for the ancestor's of Richard "Dickie" Wood. The clerk wrote him back and gave him a line that could only be our line of ancestors. For some unknown reason, Dr. Amos Wood put down another Wood line beginning with Stephen. This has been corroborated by a lady in Pennsylvania who is a descendent of Stephen Wood and Richard "Dickie" Wood etc. are not in that line.
Here is the way our ancestors should go:
Thomas Wood, Sr. b. abt 1721 had a son named John Sr. and Thomas Jr.John Sr. mar. Agnes who went by "Nellie".They had John Jr.b. abt 1767, Henry b. abt 1768, Richard "Dickie" b. abt 1769, Elijah, Elizabeth, Winifred, Agnes, Rachael, Milly "Mahala".John Wood, Jr. mar. Elizabeth "Betsy" Thompson. They had John Wood, III who mar. Lydia Bryant. His sister was Elleander who married Henry Boyd.I'm afraid I don't know the descendants of John, Jr. and Richard "Dickies" other siblings.
When I found out the info about Dr. Amos Wood's book being incorrect and that Stephen Wood was not our ancestor, things went smoothly and old walls began to come down and things started to fit together that had previously not made sense.
You say you think that theory about Richard, Jr. being the sibling of John Wood, III who married Lydia, can not be possible since John, III's father was John II (Jr). This was proven to be true by a deed. So, Richard, Jr. just wouldn't fit.
Let me know what you find.Any pieces to the puzzle you can give me, may help me to help you.
Sincerly,
Clint Sloan
