I was quite surprised to see your post to begin with and am elated that you referenced Weldon Smith.
My brother-in-law (who is now deceased) is a descendant of Weldon Smith.
It is a long and complicated story of natural parents and adopted/step parents that apparently involved George Francis Wonch.
Before I answer much more, how do you relate to George Francis Wonch.I am guessing that you may be a GURR descendant also?????
I see from your post that you mentioned I believe your grandfather Ernest Nathan/Nathen............it is my understanding that if we are talking about the same Ernest Nathan/Nathen that he is the natural son of George Francis Wonch and Ida Mae/May Davis. That he assumed the GURR name either by adoption or just assumption of living in the household when his mother Ida Mae/May Davis married Frederick James Gurr.
Does any of this sound familiar or relevant to what you are inquiring about?
I will wait to hear from you.
Thank you for responding so promptley
