Hello,
I see it has been a while since you have posted this question about Mary and Joseph Wolf. I have been looking into a Mary and Joseph Wolf who ended up in Bourbon, KS. It would appear they are my paternal g-g-g-g grandparents. I followed them backwards from Oklahoma into Kansas, etc. I think you may have the Kansas Wolf family confused with some Wolf's that seem to have stayed in Illinois. You were right when you said the marriage date didn't seem to fit with some of the children's dates of birth. I have found a marriage record of a Joseph Wolfe marrying a Mary E. Dodson in Bourbon, KS in 1866, which would fit nicely with the first child (Jerome) being born in 1867 or so (as according to the 1880 census). I have also found traces of them already married in the 1870 census and living in Bourbon, KS. So, the 1872 date doesn't fit with that census document. I think the marriage in IL was another couple - so maybe it is your Mary Franklin, but she did not marry Joseph Wolf and end up in Bourbon, KS. Perhaps she did marry a Frances or Frank and stayed in Illinois or a nearby state.
In my research, I have come across other Mary and Joseph Wolf's. Seems like people weren't creative with names back then...
I hope you have found the answer to your question before now, but if not, I hope my comments can help you in your research.
