SHREVEPORT, LA - Services for artist, Marie Isabelle Wolf Butler, 85, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 10, 2009, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1210 Anniston, Shreveport, LA 71105. Officiating will be Father Karl Daigle. Fellowship will be held at the church following the service.
Marie was born on December 6, 1923, in Shreveport and died on September 29, 2009. Marie was the only daughter of C. Redmond Wolf and Mary Looney Wolf, who predeceased her.
Marie Butler was a graduate of St. Vincent's Academy and attended Centenary College where she pledged Chi Omega sorority. She was an active member and often an officer of the Northwest Louisiana Diabetic Association, Shreveport Art Council, Hoover Watercolor Society, Shreveport Sculpture Club, Seven Plus One Art Group, Era Club and Marquette Club. She volunteered many years in the Christian Service Program. Marie was a 1979 recipient of the National Conference of Christians and Jews Brotherhood and Humanitarian Award.
Marie is survived by her husband of 60 years, James H. Butler, Sr.; one son, James H. Butler, Jr. of Missouri; daughters, Golda Garrett Reynolds and her husband, James Reynolds of Houston, TX; Katherine Butler LeBlanc of Shreveport, LA; grandchildren, Beth R. Gray, Theresa R. Martin and Carolyn R. Donovan all of Houston, TX; Christian F. Walters and Auguste M. LeBlanc of Shreveport, LA; Patrick Ray and wife, Jenny; Joseph Ray; Anne-Marie Ray all of Bentonville, AR. Marie is also survived by her brothers, Colonel (Ret) Charles R. Wolf and wife, Kay, of Shalimar, FL; LtCol (Ret) Anthony E. Wolf and wife, Marolyn, of Benton, LA; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding her in death were her daughter, Mary Lynn Butler Ray, and grandson, Benjamin Ray.
Marie was an accomplished artist in the mediums of watercolor, oil, glass and sculpture. She had many one-woman shows and encouraged many artists to pursue their dreams and talents. Marie was known for oil portraits which included many children of entire families. Numerous couples cherish Marie's hand-painted wedding invitations.
The family wishes to especially thank Mary Alice Player, Alice Evans, Eleanor Lee and all the staff of Heritage Manor - Stratmore for providing years of special care.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Diabetic Association, Alzheimer's Research or a charity of the donor's choice.
