WOLCOTT/WALCOTT/WILCOTT DNA PROJECT UPDATE CURRENT OR POTENTIAL PARTICIPANTS: 7 CURRENT TESTS WHOLY OR PARTIALLY COMPLETED: #1 - Descendant of unknown immigrant #2 - Descendant of Henry Wolcott of Windsor CT #3 - Descendant of Samuel Wolcott of Shrewsbury NJ #4 - Descendant of William Walcott of Salem MA PRELIMINARY RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: #1 is closely related to #3, and therefore probably a descendant of Samuel Wolcott of New Jersey #2 is distantly related to #1 and 3, indicating that the immigrants Henry Wolcott and Samuel Wolcott were related. #4 is totally unrelated to #1, 2, and 3, supporting the theory that there were at least 2 different Wolcott/Walcott families, one originating in Devon and one in Shropshire. #1, 2, and 3 probably belong to the Devonshire Wolcotts and #4 probably to the Shropshire Walcotts. One interesting aspect of this is that the ancient origin of #1, 2, and 3 is Western European, i.e. Anglo-Saxon or Celtic, while that of #4 is Nordic, presumably from the pre-Conquest Danish invasions. FUTURE EFFORTS: We have a descendant of the immigrant, John Wolcott of Kent Co. MD, who we think will be participating, which will indicate whether this immigrant was related to Henry and Samuel, as we believe. We encourage any male Wolcott, Walcott, or Wilcott to participate, but particularly would like to have at least one more Wolcott descendant of Henry, preferably through his sons Henry or George, and another descendant of William of Salem. We would also like at least one descendant of John Wolcott of Watertown/Newbury and one from the Pennsylvania Wolcott family. What would really help tie it together is the participation of a Devonshire Wolcott or Woolcott and a Shropshire Walcott. While we are still early in this process, we believe our DNA project is already providing valuable information. Once a DNA pattern is established, we will be able to confirm the relationships of those Wolcotts whose connections to the colonial Wolcott families are either unknown or are based upon circumstantial, but undocumented, evidence. In addition, this information should allow us to sort out the relationships of the various Wolcott and Walcott lines in America and their English forbearers, answering questions that we have had for many years. We are currently planning a presentation on this new field of DNA analysis in genealogical research to be given at the upcoming Wolcott Family Society Reunion in Raleigh, North Carolina. For those able to attend, the meeting is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, immediately prior to the Society Business Meeting. We hope to see you there.
