My paternal great-grandfather,Edward Wittwer, said he came from Bern. The best date I have for his birth is August 3, 1866. His marriage record of 1888 says his parents were David Wittwer and Magdalena ?
Magdalena is probably correct as he named one daughter (my grandmother) Magdalena.

His Declaration of Intent for citizenship was dated July 15, 1884. His name first appears in the Buffalo City Directory for 1884.

Never heard any thing about any siblings or other relatives here in Buffalo, New York or in Switzerland. Any Swiss relatives here were those of his wife (a Birchler from Einsiedeln).

My father said he was not Catholic like his wife but we do not know what he was as he did not attend any church.

Could he possibly be one of the Wittwers who vanished from Switzerland?

There was a John Wittwer in this area of Western New York circa 1840. I have found records on the births, marriages and deaths of his family through the years. His place of birth has been shown as Germany (Baden).
