I am Donna Witthoft McKinnon. My father was Arthur Witthoft. His mother, Mary was not married to his father Edward Langwith. Her father threw her out of his house when she became pregnant. There was some speculation that it was because the father was Irish and the old man hated the Irish for some reason and hence would not allow her to marry him. Later, when my father was about 5 years old she married some man named Claus and she brought my father back to her father where he remained until he was old enough to leave. He was raised with the other children of his grandparents, his grandmother died (she was burned to death)at some point either before or after he was returned. He was closest to his aunt Alma, who Pat knew. His grandfather was not a nice man and was mean to his children and my father as well and they all left home at a fairly early age. I don't think my father ever knew his father's name. I believe my mother found out at some point after my father died from the birth certificate she got from someone when some older relative died and they were looking for heirs.
My father always considered himself a "bastard" and hated that he had no father. He never allowed any of us to use that word. I hope this clears up the mystery.
