On the last link it said that Hiram was a brother to Daniel, and that Samuel was their father. Do you have another document that states his father as Hiram?
I thought it was interesting that Clara Matthews family was related to Grant's V.P., Schuyler Colfax. Also, if that site is correct, it states that Daniel Witter had a second cousin named "Ulysses Grant" and a second cousin named "Daniel Colfax". There must be a connection there some way to the Daniel in Denver who married Clara Matthews, S.Colfax's sister.
