"In 1842 about 4 miles from the towm of Gonzales, there was a preaching one night at a school house by Rev. Z. Morrell. Just as the sermon was over and the people were leaving, they heard a gunshot about a quarter of a mile away. The next morning some of the settlers went to the are where they heard the shot and they found the body of Dr. John Witter, covered in bleed, scalped and otherwise mutilated in the most barbarous manner. The settlers all attended the funeral of their friend. At his grave stood his four snall children. who had lost their mother only a few weeks previously. The name of his wife is unknown"
