My great grandfather was William Edmund Wittenmyer, a wealthy merchant in Ohio. He was originally married to Orpha Newkirk Duncan. Her mother was Margaret. My grandmother, Sally Ann Wittenmyer, was born to Orpha, Aug 18, 1836. There was another daughter, Louise, about which I have no info. Orpha died in childbirth with a 3rd child, a boy. In 1847 William married Annie Turner and she raised my grandmother, then 11, as her own. Annie Wittenmyer was famous as a Civil War Union Army nurse, although untrained. Her book, "Under the Guns" is the basis for a book I am working on, "Silent Guns".

My primary interest, however, is William Edmund. He was a LtCol in the Sixth Infantry and some kind of Military Attache. Appreciate any info you may have. Thanks, Dorothy
