Hello Jessica,

I don't know if I am or have a direct line with Nicholas, but there is a very good possibility. I have just recently found out I have ancestors that moved to ILL and also NE. And being a not so common name, I believe the wittekinds all lived near eachother or moved to be with other family members. I do Know that the Wittekinds were involved in many wars, they were very proud soldiers and were in the elite group of soldiers. The book I have talks all about them going back as far as the 1500's. I also learned from my researching that there were many Wittekinds that were Hessen Soldiers and had been coming to America since 1775 or 1774. Some stayed here and some when back to Germany. Most Hessen troops or should I say the Largest group of Hessen soldiers that were called to war came from Cassel, Germany. I don't know how much room I have to write, but will continue in another email with some very interesting information that I have from the Wittekind book. cont.
