Who is Micheal Witmer, father of Elizabeth who married Jacob Seitz?
Can anyone out there help me sort out who my Elizabeth Witmer, spouse of Jacob Seitz and daughter of Michael Witmer are? If I start with the assumption that they lived in Manor Township, Lancaster County (which seems like a reasonable start since everyone else in the family did!) then I am left with two possible Micheal Witmers who show up on the Manor tax lists in 1751 (but not in the 1714-1728 lists).
Michael #1 was born 1714 and immigrated with his parents, John and Catherine, sister Elizabeth and uncle Benjamin from Switzerland in 1716. He died 1789. It is this Michael that married Anna Long (b 1720 d 1792). They had 5 children: John, Abraham, Herman, Ann and Elizabeth(Mary). Although various people out there identify this Elizabeth as the wife of Jacob Seitz, I do not believe this Elizabeth is my Elizabeth, wife of Jacob Seitz. This Elizabeth married Jacob Knopf, and died 1789 leaving a single son, Jacob Knopf Jr. This information is fairly well documented; I have based these conclusions on Michael & Anna's wills, gravestones for John, Catherine, Michael, Anna, Herman and tax lists, and ships list. The information is also confirmed in the Bio Annals of Lancaster County for the Witmer family.
Micheal#2 is a bit more elusive. He is in the Manor tax list for 1751. He dies around 1763. The abstract for his will, probated 1763, shows his wife to be Barbara, children from his 1st wife to be be Anna, Magdalena and Barbara, and child from his 2nd wife (Barbara) to be John. Various accounts floating around state he had additional children by his 2nd wife, Barbara, to include Elizabeth. But I find no sources for this conclusion. Nor can I tie down where this Micheal comes from. It seems he is most likely the Michael Witmer (b.1672) who immigrated in 1733 on the Ship Hope with his sons Ulrick (b. 1702), John/Johannes/Hans (b.1713), Peter (b.1714) and Anna (b.1717). As I find no other Michael Witmers in all of Lancaster County in the 1750 tax lists, and the sons all settled in Lancaster County, it seems that the Manor Micheal #2 is probably this Micheal, or else this Micheal is dead by 1750. There is also a Micheal Witmer (age unknown) who immigrated in 1732 on the ship Pennsylvania Merchant, and some accounts describe the Micheal i.1932 as the brother of Ulrick,John and Peter, son of Micheal, who came a year earlier and then sent for the family. Seems plausible, but again, I have no sources. If this theory is true, then Micheal #2 could be the younger Micheal, brother of Ulrick, John and Peter, rather than father of Micheal, Ulrick and Peter.
Can anyone shed any more light on the origins of my Elizabeth and Micheal? It would be most appreciated!
