Anne, John Withington was born at Dorchester July 1, 1649. About 1672 he married Elizabeth Preston. He died in 1690, being drowned , with 46 others of the Dorchester military company, of which he was captain, in the expedition of Sir William Phips against Quebec.

His parents were Richard Withington, bapt. Leigh, Co. Lancaster, England, May 3, 1618, Died at Dorchester Dec. 22, 1701. He married, about 1648, Elizabeth Eliot, bapt. Nazeing, Co. Essex, England, April 8, 1627, died at Dorchester Apr 18, 1714. Richard Withington came with his father and stepmother to New England (in 1635), was admitted a freeman May 13, 1640, was elected a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1646, was deacon of the church in Dorchester in 1668, and was elected several times as a selectman. He was always active and prominent in public affairs.

John Withington's son, Samuel was born at Dorchester May 4, 1684 and died Dec. 15, 1726. He married at Dorchester, July 11, 1715, Abigail Pierce, born at Dorchester Aug. 20, 1694, died there May 23, 1761.
