Hey Lane,
I was always told I was descended from John Witherspoon the signer as well, but... it is like yours, a family tale. If you are in Lucy Welche's line, then you are a cousin as am I. Also Lucy's line was related to Mary Queen of Scots but not descended from her, we are a younger line from Robert II's 2nd son Robert. That line also gives you most of the Royal houses of Northern Europe down to Charlemane. I am descended from John Witherspoon, Lucy's grandson, who married his cousin Janet Witherspoon and also from her sister Jane. Yes the Witherspoons had a thing for cousins. The signer is, I think, the son of of their brother James III who married an Ann Walker. That should help on a search. My John Witherspoon, brought his family to the Kingstree area of South Carolina, some went to NC, others south to GA and AL. My line came to the Columbia area of TN, Mt. Plesant and founded the Zion Community. Many still live there, though few are still named Withespoon. Look for "The Friersons of Zion Church" a good genealogy of the Friersons and related families, Witherspoons, Fultons, Flemings and Stevensons. The Witherspoons founded Kingstree where the Zion Community left for the wilds of TN. If you need more recent info than the Zion book, I think it is current to about 1920, my mother is in it but her little brother isn't. She was born in 1919. There is a much more recent, more exhaustive book but more Frierson based, that takes the Zion book and updates it to about 1990. C 1996 but of course he would be several years behind plus he is interested in Friersons all over the US and only a small part are Witherspoons. Mead Frierson's "America's Frierson s Ancestry Book" Good luck on your hunt.
