There is a William Witherington in Cheraws District, SC on the 1790 Census.A Richard W'ington (all the variations) and a Thomas W'ington fought in the Rev War from SC and both received land grants in GA.I am posting this from my office and don't have my files available to give you dates.
My branch also became Worthingintons more or less permanently after the Civil War - there was that one census record in 1880 where the older generation was still listed as Weathington, but both daughters married as Worthingtons. And my ancestor appears to have been named Micajah - got those biblical names going.I am interested in learning more about your branch.
