My name is Eveleth Hill and I live in Marshall, MO. My line on my mother's side comes down thru Ephraim Witcher who lived south of Marshall in the Elk Lick area with two brothers, James and Caleb. James had a large hotel health spa at Elk Lick Springs. I've been to the area, cemetery and the land was owned by Virginia Schanz who lived across the street from me. My grandmother, Olivia Lea Morgan Pollard was a daughter of Emily Witcher, daughter of Ephraim and Nancy Young Witcher. Dan Witcher, son of James Witcher, was a close cousin of my grandmother and she is the one who found him dead in his house, two doors away from her house on Salt Pond Street in Marshall. I have a picture of Dan--it is a group picture of the family, but it is clear. Caleb's cemetery is well maintained and organized by Virginia Finley, who has pased away. She was a wonderful person. James Witcher established the cemetery at the springs, Elk Lick Cemetery or Dan Witcher cemetery. It is my understanding that Dan Witcher maintained it until he died. I think I still have the cardboard funeral grave marker--to my knowledge no stone was ever placed. It is very difficult to get to and don't go when the rattlesnakes are out. I've walked all over out there, thru Heath Creek and where the hotel and store stood. The store's foundation is still there, I think.
Ephraim's cemetery is a feed lot now, just across the Saline County line in Pettis County. A real shame, the stones are gone. I saw it once years ago with Virginia Finley and it was not a feed lot--but just like overnight everything was gone.
