John Costy Wishart was b 26 Jul 1815 and d 8 Jul 1891. He was bapt 30 Jun 1816 in St Dunstan’s, Stepney. His father was John W who wed Harriet Ann Costy sometime after 27 Oct 1810 (see Faculty Office Marriage Licences Allegations Index held in the library of the Society of Genealogists in London). I have reason to believe but cannot prove that John W was b in Orkney (around 1785).
I have a card for a John W who must have been b around 1785; he wed Harriet Ann (family name unknown) and had the following children in the Rotherhithe area of London: Alfred, Amelia Jane, Frederick Augustus, Harriot (sic) Ann and William. I know that Alfred (b bef 10 Nov 1822) wed Ann (FNU) and had a son Alfred St Lawrence W.
I strongly suspect that the John who wed Harriet Ann Costy is the same John who wed Harriet Ann (FNU) and had son John Costy W.
John Costy W wed Elizabeth Ann Dalton (28 Jun 1828 – 25 Dec 1876) in the quarter ending 30 Sep 1848 in Auckland. They had the following children (not in order):
Sidney, Charles, Mabel, Elvyn, Richard and Leta. I was told by Ernest Edward Wishart that Eliz Ann W left John Costy W and went to Canada where she died.
Do you know that Sidney W was knighted (1921) and was Lord Lieutenant of London? He was a Colonel in the Boer War. His son Ernest Edward (11 Aug 1902 – 16 Sep 1987) was a communist millionaire and owner of the publishing house Lawrence & Wishart. He wed a stunning beauty Lorna Cecilia Joseph Garman in 1927 and she was the lover of Laurie Lee, the author.
That is a sample of the whole story but perhaps you know more than I do?
