Hi, John:Now that the day's work is over (I'm the Chaplain at a campus for 700 mentally retarded elderly adults), let's get on with the Wisemans. My inquiry has been begging for responses for a very long time, so how happy I am to have found you!
My gr. gr. grandmother was Catherine Wiseman who mar. Isaac Camp of Norwalk, CT.She was the dau. of James (b. June 26, l792 or l794 in Glassford) and Catherine Margaret (Evans) who were mar. in NYC in l822.
The complete list of James and Catherine's children:Amelia Ann (1823), James Henderson (l825), Catherine Louisa (l828), Maria Cox (l830), Sarah Elizabeth (1833), John (1837), Edwin Ruthorn (1839), and William (l841.
James, a shoemaker, was made a U>S> citizen in l832.We have from him some daguerreotypes, several photos of the family,a bonnet, their old wedding gown, an l805 banjo clock, James' autograph (l879), and a well-penned statement from John Wiseman.
Selleck's Journal (Norwalk) described James as "a man of truth and sincerity...a thinker and a leader and one whose candor, whose intelligence, and whose conduct impressed. His life adorned his adopted America, and his worth gave credit to his native Scotland."
I visited Glassford on a rainy spring day and was shown around the village parish Church and neighborhood.I was given two names: l) The Rev. Bill T. Stewart, The Manse Westdene, Townhead Street, Strathaven MLl0; 2) Brian Eagleson, 8 Miller Street, Glassford MLl0 6TD.Eagleson is an Elder of the congregation.
I was told that the Pastor was historically inclined, so I wrote him and enclosed $25 for his trouble of looking up all of the Wiseman info.Surprisingly he cashed the check and made no reply.Several months later I sent a followup but still no reply--he apparently took the money and ran!
I'm under the opinion that James and his bro. John were sons of James and Ann (Henderson) Wiseman. And that perhaps James Wiseman was the son of John and Agnes (Dalgleish) Wiseman, b. ca l724 in Cambusnethan.
I have not taken the time to write Brian Eagleson.
You might like to know that I am the author of Thomas & Richard Brush of Huntington, Long Island, a 900-page genealogy of the Brush family, and that we are doing a Millennium Brush Family Reunion in Huntington this summer for l50 folks from 24 states, Canada, England, and New Zealand.
So, to the point:What do you have on the Wisemans.I would be ecstatic to have you share your info with me.
A halo to your day!--Stuart
