The Samuel WISE family of Gallia Co., OH
Posted by: David Myers (ID *****5457) Date: February 22, 2012 at 17:16:33

There are three people named WISE associated with Gallia Co., OH whom I believe may be children of the Samuel WISE who lived in Cheshire Twp., Gallia Co., OH in 1820.

1. Judah WISE (m. George ROUSH): Judah is listed as being born in PA in all three census returns (1850-1870), although there is some question as to whether the last two entries refer to her. She and her husband lived in Cheshire Twp., Gallia Co., OH. Judah was born in 1789, died in 1856 or 1876, so she is the oldest of these three.

2. Elizabeth WISE (m. Jonas ROUSH): Elizabeth is listed by The "History of The Roush Family In America" (1928), by Rev. Lester LeRoy Roush, as being a sister of Judah (WISE) ROUSH, and being from Scipio Twp. of Meigs Co., OH. The latter has been interpreted as indicating that Scipio Twp. was her birth place but it seems more likely to me that she was a resident of that township at the time of her marriage, sometime before 1815. Jonas and Elizabeth also lived in Cheshire Twp., Gallia Co., OH. Elizabeth was born in Oct 1794, died on 6 Nov 1825, so she is the second of these three.

3. Daniel WISE (m. Elizabeth KNOPP): The Family History Library International Genealogical Index has Daniel's birth as 19 Aug 1796, Reading, Berks Co., PA, died 29 Jun 1869, parents are Samuel WISE and wife. Daniel was listed as being born in PA (1850), and in VA (1860). His children consistently list his birth place as PA. All of this is consistent with him being born in Berks Co., PA.

Has anybody seen the estate records for Samuel WISE? That would be the best indication of whom his descendants were. I also may try to locate baptism records from Berks Co., PA churches and see if anything turns up there. This family seems to have had a strong relationship with the Philip ROUSH (1741-1820) family, so I would like to get more information about where they came from. Thanks.
