John,
On my Dance-Rine Family Tree, public tree on ancestry.com you can get a ton of info on James--but I don't know about that middle initial. If you have a source for it, I would love it. It isn't on his tombstone or his will.

I have been finding everything I could on the internet over the summer and fall. Helpful people have put up his will, pictures of his grave from the 1960's before it got a bit broken by cattle. Permelia Miller (definite on this spelling) is buried next to him on the pasture of his farm. It stayed in the Wise family until not too long ago. Now owned by an Owen. If you see postings by Dot Wirth Wise, her parents owned it until within the last 15 years or so. I have pictures of it from the 1980's after it got broken from a descendant who lives within an hour from there but she wants to put them on the internet herself but I could send to you if you don't post online--just put in your own software or whatever. I have found another document about a little tussle over inventory of the estate from a son in law and Permelia Miller Wise as well. Lastly a transcription from a Louisiana Baptist meeting with stories of James Wise Family church activity.

There are lots of family trees to connect to on ancestry.com for this line as he and the generation up and down had enormous families.
