Wirth's immigrated from Unterturkheim, Germany to Cleveland in 1849
I don't know how common Wirth was in southwestern Germany.
My 3rd great grandparents, Johannes Wirth & Christiana Bernerin immigrated with their children to Cleveland via New York City in 1849 from Unterturkeim, near Stuttgart. The Wirths in Germany were primarily vineyard growers. John & Chris's children stayed in the Cleveland area, but the parents and youngest three children (Gottlieb Jeremias, Jacob Heinrich and Johannes W) moved to Moscow, Muscatine, Iowa by the mid 1850's to farm.By 1870, they were farming in Leavenworth County, Kansas, and soon the sons were pursuing other professions.Gottlieb became a miller and baker, Jacob a jeweler and Johannes a minister. The older children appear to have maintained the Wirth surname, while the parents and youngest sons saw their surname spelled many ways in the various censuses in the second half of the 19th century, until it settled into Wuerth.
I have traced many of the Wuerth descendants of the three youngest sons, but I know little of the oldest children, Christiana Catharina, Johann David and Johann Gottlieb, who I believe maintained the Wirth surname.I would be interested in speaking with anyone who knows anything about this family tree.
