Mary Alicia (Wirt) Whitney named the town of Marshall Minnesota. A committee is interested in placing a statue of Mary Alicia in a city park. We would like a photo of Mary Alicia or perhaps another female Wirt relative so we can have a likeness as close as possible. Charles H Whitney and Mary Alicia Wirt were married at Wampum, Wisconsin on Oct. 28th, 1860. Mary Alicia named the town of Marshall in July 1872 after her husband's post office during a party for Railroad officials establishing a station at Marshall.
Mary Alicia Wirt was the youngest daughter of Noah and Fanny Wirt, was born in Willonghby Ohio, July 22, 1843. Her Father was a Minister. Mary Alicia died Feb. 11, 1911 in Cookville, Putnam County, TN. Two sisters, Mrs. Joel Nash of Austin MO and Mrs. A. Allis of Oronoco Mn, and one brother, Alvin Wirt of Cookville TN survived her. Mary Alice had four surviving children: Mrs. John Schneider, Mrs. F.H. White, Mrs. J.T. Snodgrass, and Miss Gertrude Whitney.
