FOUND.....Martha J. Winton's Obituary, 1907

Many thanks to the Polk County, Arkansas Genealogists who so thoroughly recorded death notices and obituaries from the film of the Mena Weekly Star into a loose leaf notebook. I found the following death notice/obituary for my great grandmother, Martha Jane Winton. It does NOT give her name, only her husband's name, but she was living with my grandfather, George T. (Dink) Winton when she died. He and his three brothers are listed by name which verifies we have the right Mrs. George Winton. From the very "sparse" entry in the notebook and using the handwritten newspaper dates in the margin from the Polk Co. researchers, I was able to find the film and read the obituary in the newspaper. Evidently, Martha died on Sunday, June 2, 1907 and was buried on Monday, June 3, 1907(working backwards from the date of the paper). It looks like the obituary (death notice) was written on Monday (3rd), then printed in the newspaper on Thursday (6th).

Mrs. George Winton Dead
Was Stricken Suddenly at Home of Her Son Near Rocky

Word was received in this city late Sunday afternoon conveying the sad news of the death of Mrs. George Winton, which occurred at the home of her son, Dink, at Rocky, with whom she was making her home.

Mrs. Winton, although quite feeble from old age, arose Sunday morning apparently in good health as usual and while sitting at the breakfast table, she was seized with a paralytic stroke and lived until 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

Mrs. Winton was well known in Polk County, having lived here all her life. She is survived by four children, M.D. Winton of this city, Jack and Dink, who live at Rocky, and Bas who lives in the territory.

She was laid to rest at Rocky Monday afternoon.

She had been making her home with her son for a number of years and had all arrangements made to come to Mena to live with M.D. for awhile, and Mr. Winton was going out after her, but owing to the condition of the roads yesterday, he decided to wait a few days and later in the day he received a telephone message relating to the above sad news.
