Here's a little more. His full name was Harold Richard William Wintle. He was born in September 1870, to the then Rector of Bere Ferrers, near Plymouth (The Rev Frederick T. W. Wintle) and his wife, Annie.

Around, or sometime shortly before the beginning of the 20th Century, he took up a position as tutor to the sons of William Meath Baker, who was then the Squire of Hasfield Court, Gloucestershire, and also the subject of the fourth of the Enigma Variations, by Sir Edward Elgar. He took a particular shine to Edward J. Baker, with whom he apparently remained friends until 1912, when he was dismissed apparently under some kind of cloud - Baker family rumour has it that he broke into the family house, and stole "the family jewels"!

He was a published author of novels, poems and was also the Southwestern correspondant to The Yachting Monthly magazine.

I have also been told, that before the second world war, he retired from the Air Ministry, but I don't know where he was based.

Next a correction to my original post:

His last known address was at a house called RIDGEDOWN, in the town of Harrietsham, Maidstone.

He died on December 7th 1941, and is buried in the cemetery of St. Michael and All Angels Church in Colwich, Staffordshire.

What I'd like to find out is:

a) Was he married ? and if so, to whom ?
b) Does he have any descendants ? and if so, do any survive ?
c) How did he come to be buried in Staffordshire, when his last known address is in Maidstone ?

Best Regards

Dave Seer
