James Winter c1843 of Hart Co, GA

Is this James properly identified as son of James Cook Winter of Anderson Co, SC?

Trees on Rootsweb (last updated 2003) call him James Cook Winter, JR but in the censuses of 1850 (in JCW's home), 1870, 1900 & 1910 his middle initial is given as "H". None was given in 1860 (in JCW's home) and in 1880 it was indexed by LDS as "L" but on examination it likes a highly stylized "H".

Genealogists in the Jedediah Garrison branch of the Garr*son family reported that two daughters of Jed's son Rev Levi Garrison of Anderson Co/Dist, SC married men named Winter. I am not sure what their sources were; likely old family members. However, there is confusion here.

They list without giving dates, places or the groom's first name: Matilda Garrison m _____ Winter.

They also list Martha Leana Garrison, b 25 Aug 1814, married James C Winter. Her death supposedly was reported in the "Southern Christian Advocate" (abstracted by Holcomb) on 9 Nov 1849 but I have not had a chance to see if he printed "Matilda" or "Martha".

James was living without a wife but with three sons: Levi, James H and Joseph C, in Anderson Co 1850. The 1850 Mortality Schedule lists the death of Matilda Winter in Oct 1850. The computerized record shows 1850 but how could a census enumerator on 28 Sep 1850 know that she would die in Oct?

The Rootsweb trees I mentioned ignore the possibility of a Garrison wife for James C Winter even though the wife Serapta does not appear in the census until 1860. Further adding to the mystery is that the 1860 census lists Mary Reed age 16 after Seraptha's name and before any of the Winter children. Had Seraptha previously married a Reed? In fact, the name Winter is not repeated so even though there are no ditto marks, some have assumed the surname of all children (including Levi, James H and Joseph C above) was Reed. Ancestry.com indexed them as Reeds.

A last mystery concerns the younger James. In the Hart Co home of James H in 1870 the last person listed was James T Shifflett, age 12, b GA. He continued to live with or near the Winters even after he married. Those Rootsweb trees list him as the oldest child of James and Mourning but retains the name Shifflett. Who was he? A foster son? He was born c1858 GA while James was still living at home in Anderson Co.

I am not a Winter descendant but DNA results have proven beyond a doubt the close relationship (likely brother) between the mentioned Jedediah Garrison (c1752-1830) and my g-g-g-g-grf Ebenezer Garrason (c1750-1801) of Duplin Co, NC. My interest is that I am tracing out all of Jedediah's descendants I can find for my computer records.

Thanks for your time. Email me if you want: garrason@bellsouth.net.
