My James was born in 1796 in Northern Ireland. He immigrated, via Canada, to Argyle, NY, but died in Schaghticoke, NY which is South of Argyle. He was married to Jane Elizabeth Irvine. He had a son, William James Winslow who was an older brother of my ancestor, Samuel B. Winslow who married Ruth A. Thompson. The Thompsons lived in Schaghticoke and both James Winslow and Robert Thompson(Ruth's father)are buried in Elmwood cemetery there. Samuel B. Winslow moved to Troy, NY and had a son, Norvin, and a daughter,May. Norvin died without issue. May married Thomas H. Campion of Troy, NY and they have a number of descendants, including myself.
I have often wondered whether my James Winslow is related to the Mayflower Winslows. It seems likely, but I'm not sure how close. I consulted two Northern Ireland genealogist, and it was thought likely that James' father was probably John Winslow of Co. Monaghan, and that he was descended from a soldier in Oliver Cromwell's Army. Many of Cromwell's soldiers were owed back pay and settled their claims for land in Ireland. Some records from the Church of Ireland Diocese of Clougher (part of the Anglican Communion) show that a number of Winslows and Irvines were members of the Church of Ireland there. The records I have don't go back as far as 1796. A number of Winslows are found in the records of Ireland. I have tentatively concluded that my Winslow ancestors were part of a group of settlers, perhaps soldiers, who moved from England about the time of Cromwell. Gov. Edward Winslow's father moved to Ireland when he was older. Could my James have been connected with him? Also, several Winslows moved back to England at various times after the founding of the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colonies. Could they have had issue who moved to Ireland for some reason?
