I have wondered that too.Who were the witnesses, preacher, etc.?Perhaps that would help shed some light on the situation.
We know that Norvell and Susan's John remained in the St. Louis area.It is really not all that far by river to Pike Co, IL.For all we know, he may have worked on the river.
I guess the main thing is to look for other Winnifords in the Pike Co area, and also across the river in MO.In the absence of other Winnifords, the conservative guess might be that they are the same man.However, it would be nice to have further corroboration, such as the presence of the name Johnson or some other closely related name on his documents, or within his children's names -- assuming he had any.According to other family researchers, he may have died young.
