Daniel Winn/Wynne d. Lunenburg, VA 1799
The Daniel Winn whose will was proved 14 Feb 1799 in Lunenburg Co (Lunenburg Will Book 4 at p 240, cited hereafter as “LWB 4:240") is shown on most Winn/Wynne GEDCOMS with wife Sarah Tench.I can’t agree with that, and would appreciate someone telling me where I am going wrong with this analysis.
Daniel’s wife was definitely named Sarah, see deed dated 23 July 1768 from Daniel and wife Sarah to John Winn. LDB 11:183.However, Daniel acknowledged that deed 11 Aug 1768 and there is no accompanying note that Sarah relinquished dower. That perhaps suggests that Daniel’s wife Sarah died between 23 July and 11 Aug 1768.Also, subsequent conveyances by Daniel do not mention any wife.Daniel dies by 1799 without mentioning his wife in his will, and I have not found anything in the deed records suggesting that any of Daniel’s land is subject to a dower interest of his wife Sarah after 1800.All of that also suggests to me that Sarah predeceased Daniel.
The will of Henry Tench proved 9 Aug 1784 names daughter Sarah Wynne, proving that a Sarah Tench alive as of 1784 definitely married SOME Winn. However, the information I have seen about Sarah Tench Winn suggests that she may have been the wife of Thomas Winn, who left will dated 18 Sep 1799, proved 12 Apr 1781 (LWB 3: 75).Wife Sarah is named in that will.“Mrs.Wynne” and “Sarah Wynne” show up in the March 1784 procession orders for Cumberland Parish (see “Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg Co., VA 1746-1816,” by Landon Bell, 1930) shortly after Thomas died.Thomas’s widow Sarah also shows up in the 1787 census for Lunenburg with 14 slaves, living adjacent John TENCH, possibly her brother.(Compare the inventory of Thomas’s estate, showing 18 slaves, LWB 3: 82).
Thomas’ 1799 will named sons Washington and Edmund, both underage.Sarah subsequently appears with her son Edmund in 1819, signing an agreement with John Winn, in which Edmund expressly states he is NOT bound by his mother Sarah’s conduct.LDB 25: 82.Sarah Wynne also appears in a conveyance dated 25 Dec. 1817, in which the land conveyed is subject to her dower interest as the widow of Thomas. LDB 22: 12.Sarah died in 1820, naming her son Edmund. WB 8: 118.
If Sarah Tench Wynne was in fact the wife of Daniel rather than Thomas, I am obviously missing something. Can someone please tell me where I am going wrong?
Thanks in advance.
Robin Rankin Willis (6-great granddau of Daniel)
