"My great-great grandfather Hans Winkler migrated from Switerland (according to his citizenship papers). He wrote in a diary that he lived in an orphange. My grandmother remembers hearing that he and his sibling were put there because his mother died unexpectedly and his father was unable to care for them. We have no information on the siblings names (or parents) or where exactly he lived. His diary was written in German that he kept. Any information would be much appreciated!?

An Andrew Winkler in CA said his family came from Zell, Switzerland.

My Winkler family came from over the hill of the Black Forest near Munich, Germany. There is a small town named Winkler near Munich. Check with a translator. German Swiss and German German may be spoken and written just a little bit differently. Then there is "high German" and "low German" could give you another clue. Is there a University or College near you? Good luck~! We may be related~! Jane Winkler in WV, USA
