http://www.rootsweb.com is absolutely free and a good source for Amercian information. It is however, sometimes difficult to find info. Try for the SEARCHES links or World Connect Project.
http://www.Ancestry.com is a pay site, that offer free access, that sometimes requires a credit card number - but - they also offer free database searches for new material. The link is on the right hand side of the page - click on Recent Databases and fill in the search once you selected a database. They also have free access to their World Family Tree.
