St. Charles (Illinois) Chronicle, Nov. 2, 1916 Obituary Clinton D. Wing, for 54 years a resident of St. Charles, passed away Monday morning, at his home on Second Ave. , after an illness of several weeks, aged 81 years and eight months. Mr. Wing was born at St. Johnsbury, Vt., Feb. 4 (?), 1835. In 1857 he was united in marriage with Margaret Wyne. They journeyed to St. Charles in 1862, before the city of St. Charles was incorporated. In 1876 he served as the second mayor of the newly established city. Mr. Wing found success in whatever occupation he desired to engage and had been in the lumbering, farming and real estate business. For a number of years past he had his headquarters in the Haines block, the suite of rooms bearing the well known names of Rockwell, Miller and Wing. (Portions of the paper are missing at this point.) ...its formative period and was instrumental in its growth. H.T. Rockwell is now the only member of that firm surviving. Mr. Wing often stated that he had no especial of the (?) business to transact, but his friendship and close acquaintance with the other two men was his excuse for consenting to their request that he make up the trio. Although reserved in manner, Mr. Wing bore his full share of the burden of telling jokes, and seeing the humorous side of the incidents which come up in daily contact with the public. Mr. Wing bought the right of way through Kane, DuPage and Cook counties for the Great Western railway and had much to do with the extension of the line through St. Charles, which brought new life to this city. --thoughtful and kind husband and father, he and his good wife have seen six of their family of nine sons an daughters pass from this plane of existence. In August of the year 1884, they laid away three children, Minnie L., Fred M. and Chas. A. In the year 1865 they lost two little daughters, Viletta and Adelia. Early the next year, they were again bereaved in the loss of a little daughter, Nettie. It took brave hearts to face this desolation of the fireside, but kindness to those living and receiving kindness in return, Mr. Wing journeyed on to his four score years with mental faculties unimpaired, and until recently, in a comfortable state of health. Surviving, besides the widow, are one son, Clinton D., and two daughters, Misses Hortense M. and Harriet A. Also a brother, Maraton Wing, and sister, Mrs. Wm. Witchell, both of Oelwein, Iowa, and both attending the funeral which was held at the home yesterday. --------- I am not related to nor researching this family and have no further information.
