Following are paste of notes I had in PAF file on William. I have never tried to obtain his pension record, or Civil War record. Added a few notes to help you. Are you part of Wills line ?

MAY HAVE DIED AT DAUGHTERS IN SMITHVILE TENN. JESSIE (Bens daughter) SAID ONE OF THEM DIED THERE AFTER HE LEFT GRANDPAWS HOUSE ON THE CREEK. ( Across Caney Fork river from Cove Hollow, about mile from Center Hill school. If you live around DeKalb, chances are you know more about the area than I do. )

DAD ( Homer Winfree ) SAID HE DIED AT CHARLES WINFREES. JESSIE SAID HE HAD BEEN LIVING WITH GRANDPAW ON THE RIVER, BUT HE WAS OFF AND JOSEY ( Mary Josephine Brock ) WAS AFRAID OF HIM AND HE WENT TO LIVE AT HIS DAUGHTERS NEAR SMITHVILLE AND WAS BURIED NEAR SMITHVILLE, TN.
HE WAS DRAWING A UNION ARMY PENSION. COLD WEATHER WHEN HE DIED.
(Chance are Homer and Jessie are both right, Homer was living at Baxter at that time, Will may have went to Charles then to Smithville later on, which would acount for the two stories.)
WILLIAM R. WINFREY LISTED IN 1890 CIVIL WAR VETERANS. DEKALB-35-2; CPL I CO 5th TN CAV; 2-9-64 TO 8-22-65; TEMPERANCE HALL PO; SHOT THRU HAND.

DEKALB CO TN MARRIAGE BOOK 1848-1900 BY PARSLEY.
W.M. WINFREE TO ELIZABETH BARNES 1 MAY 1860 BY C. STARNES, JP. ( Clarence Starnes ?? )

DEKALB COUNTY DEATH CERTIFICATES 1915
W.R. WINFREY AGE 74, DIST 9, WHITE MARRIED MALE B. 1841 D. 25 DEC 1915 OF PARALYSIS. S/O F. WINFREY & JUDY _____ INFORMANT R.P. WINNAR ( Winnard ?) BURRIED CLOSE TO SMITHVILLE BY CONGER 26 DEC 1915.
( Benjamin Franklin Winfree and Judith Robinson. Just about all of James Winfree kids used Winfree, not Winfrey. Sometimes helps to split them out. All the old records by James, David, Benjamin, Horace, Homer are Winfree. ) Can you update me on this line?
Clarence Winfree, 28031 Lorraine, Warren, MI. 48093. 810-573-4717
