I put the records together on Winfree. You may be correct, I have no proof of James Winfree birth place.
James, Jacob, and John Winfree are in the 1771 list of Granville county militia.
James farm was 640 acres about 1/2 mile east of Virgilina.
The North line of farm was on the N.C., Va. line.
We picked up one posting that listed a James Winfree in N.C, born in August 1708. Found no proof.
There was other James, James of Chesterfield Co. Va son of Valentine Winfree, This James married Nancy Scott, daughter of Walter Scott.
The Winfree of Granville, Co. were related to the Winfree of Cumberland Co. Va.
I can't put in everything, we have hundreds of pages and records.
We published two items to try and help out.
" Winfree Genealogical Workbook " a collection of notes and letters we put together in the 1960s. No system, just copies of things. 126 pages of notes and letters.
" Genealogical Records by Lela B. Winfree " published in August 2000. This is 334 pages 8 1/2 x 11, full index. Soft cover, commerical printed. Contains no notes, just basic data, fine print with full pages, cover several thousand people having some connection to Mid Tennessee and that area. Winfree is one of 20 basic famlies listed in the book, takes James Winfree line from 1750 to the present. Both have been filmed by the Church.
We looked at publishing the notes, but the book would have come to about 2000 pages, which would have priced it out of the market.
Valentine Winfree was the rich one, died 1796 and left large land and slave holdings. His children in the 1810 census were rich. Not very many rich Winfree's.
Robley Winfrey did years of work on the line but never published. He had research done in England.I have a few hundred pages of Robley's work, but only a small part of his total work.
My wife, Lela has done most of the work thru the years, and she has her own idea of James father and his line back to England, but with no proof.
The hand me down story from England is they came from Denmark or one of the low countries and stayed in England.
If you want to talk to Lela some time, call her and tell her to dial you back, we have unlinited service so it adds nothing to our bill. 586-573-4717.
