Thomas -- I'm doing some research on a James Winfree/Winfrey. Many have claimed that he was born in the area not known as Virgilina in the Goshen District of Granville Co., NC. I believe that they are incorrect.
James served, with a Jacob and John Winfree, under Capt. James Yancey of Hanover Co., VA. At the end of the war this James Yancey received land in that same area of NC. I believe that my James also received land in the same area. He does not show up in the Granville area records until 1784. The family bible shows when his son David was born, but no notation as to where, so the family assumed it was in NC. He was born in 1770. I believe he was born in VA.
You wrote of Major Winfree of Hanover -- he had a son John T. and another unknown son. What was the Major's first name? Do you know who his wife was? Do you know what captains served under him?
Ever hopeful,
Linda Mullen
