Barnabas Wines/Mary Mapes

Note: This is being posted on both the Wines and Mapes Genealogy Forums as I have seen extensive discussion of the issue on both sites. However, neither site seems to have come to a conclusion on the issue so I thought it useful to again frame the question for discussion.

I am trying to determine the identity of “Mary,” wife of Barnabas-2 Wines of Southold, Long Island. Barnabas 2 (b. September 1638 in Watertown, Massachusetts and died abt. 1715 in Southold, Long Island.) I have seen three possible answers to the question:

1. A common answer is that Barnabas-2 married Mary Mapes, daughter of Thomas Mapes (1628-1687) and Sarah Purrier (1630-1697). I have seen this in at least 3-4 separate family histories, both of the Mapes and Wines families. The big problem here is the dates don’t work, at least assuming the studies of each individual family are essentially correct. Mary Mapes apparently was born about 1662 (Mapes Family Association, “Descendants of Thomas Mapes and Sarah Purrier from Southold, Long Island”) which fits with the birth dates of her parents. Barnabas-2 Wines, by contrast, was born in September 1638 and the first children of Barnabas-2 Wines and his wife Mary were reportedly born in 1659-1661 (data from the Suffolk County Historical Society including family histories by Bessie Hoke and Edwin Wilcox. Both of these sources in turn use a 1638 DOB for Mary Mapes which doesn’t tie to the DOB’s of her parents). In other words, this doesn’t work unless the birth dates are massively off.

2. A December 1999 posting in the Wines Family Genealogy Forum cites a study by Kenn Stryker-Rodds (NGS Quarterly 63:22-24) saying Mary Mapes was the daughter of a John Mapes. No further information is given. Does anyone know more about this? I have not had a chance yet to see the Stryker-Rodds article but have the impression from the posting no further information is available.

3. Several other studies of the Wines family simply say Barnabas-2 married Mary ---------. In other words, the maiden name of his wife is unknown. This is clearly the conclusion I’m left with at the present time (but not the anser I’d like!).

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any insights on this matter. Thanks.
