New to geneaology research

Hello everyone - I am quite new to the field of genealogy research and am just beginning to try to locate some information on my father's family. My father was William Wilson Winborne (born 1928), and his father was also William Winborne, of Alabama. My only knowledge at this point is that my father's branch of the family came from South Carolina previous to Alabama, and that they were descendants of French Huguenots. To my knowledge no one on my father's side has ever traced their family tree, and I am interested in rectifying this if possible. I have located one lady by the name of Winborne who came here through Ellis Island in 1919, and a Thomas Winborne who served in the Civil War, but I have no idea if they are relatives, however distant. Can anyone point this neophyte in the right direction? Thank you for any assistance!
