I'm not very familiar with the Indiana branches of the Winans family, except to say that along with Illinois and some areas of the south, Indiana seems to be where a lot of the Winans family moved to from NJ and NY.
Your grandfather's name, Ross Winans, leads me to wonder if you're a descendant of Ross Winans the inventor and that your grandfather was intentionally named after him. There are numerous posts on this newsgroup about this Ross Winans, who lived several generations before your grandfather did.
Other than that, if you're a beginning genealogist, or just curious about your family's history - if you can get to your state's archives or a library to look through the census, it's an easy way to begin your search.
