I am writing the first book from the American point of view about 19th century rotunda panoramas. These were the biggest paintings in the world, 50 x 400=20,000 square feet, housed in their own rotundas which were 16-sided polygons. Chicago in 1893 had 6 panorama companies and 6 panorama rotundas. I am interested in panorama promoter William Wehner (1847-1928)whose address for his crockery & glass business was 319 Division Street. Wehner's panorama company was incorporated in Chicago but his studio was located in downtown Milwaukee. From September 1885 through September 1888 he produced two units of BATTLE OF ATLANTA, two units of BATTLE OF MISSION RIDGE, and four units of JERUSALEM ON THE DAY OF THE CRUCIFIXION in 1886 (Chicago debut),1887 (Minneapolis debut),1888 (Buffalo debut, later London) and 1889 (intended for Mexico City). I SEEK VINTAGE LATE 19th CENTURY IMAGES of the block that Wehner shared with Charles T.Wilt:West Division to the North,West Elm to the South,Moore (an alley?) to the East, and Orleans to the West.At hand is a Sanborn fire insurance map ca 1910 procured from the Library of Congress. In fall 1888 Wehner removed to his San Jose wine ranch (see WEHNER MANSION on the internet) where he helped start the white wine industry. I have info to share.
