Hi Bruce Here's your Penelope in my database: http://hindskw.com/KennethHinds/716.html Penny's father was indeed Captain John. John's father was Henry, whose father was John, whose father was another John and was the immigrant. Follow the links on my site up the line to get the information. I am descended from Penny's brother James Marion, and also from her sister Nancy. You should also check the Motley genforum for more info. Larry Motley of the American Motley Family Association used to post there frequently. He probably knows more about Motleys than anyone else. I won't be following the Lynns beyond Edward, as they aren't my ancestors. On my page for Edward I have a link to a RootsWeb entry with more info, but I see now that it is broken. Sorry I can't help you with them. I'm not positive, but I think the Wake Co families did all move to KY at pretty much the same time. There were several other families in addition to the Lynns, Motleys, and Willoughbys who seem to have lived in the same neighborhood in Wake Co and all took off for KY. Given the timing, I'd say they were after the newly-available land. As you pointed out, these people were all farmers in NC, and seem to have continued to be so in KY. The Willoughbys may have arrived before the other families. Anthony Willoughby received a land grant in Warren Co before 1799, and he and son John appear on Warren Co tax lists in 1800. I suspect they came out to settle their new land, and were so pleased with it they came back and urged the neighbors to come on out. Another of my ancestral families, Rigsby, also came from Wake Co to Allen Co, but they detoured through Pendleton Dist SC first. They lived there about 8 years, then came to Allen Co (at the time Warren Co) with several Burton brothers, including Cuthbert who was a major figure in early Allen Co. I think the Burtons lived in Orange Co NC (next to Wake) before moving to SC. The family originated in Henrico Co VA. Several of the Wake Co families were originally from VA, so I think they are probably connected further back. Can you tell me about the children of Edward Lynn + Penelope Motley? I know they had Nancy, John, Elizabeth, and Mary. But there are several other children listed in the 1820 and 1830 census whom I haven't been able to identify. Do you know who they are?
