As you are, no doubt, aware, William Sherley Williams, son of Joseph Williams and Sarah Musick, was commonly known as "Old Bill Williams, the Mountain Man. Many locations "Out West" are named for him. He died in his 60s at the hands of the Ute Indians in Colorado, during his attempt to assist Fremont in his explorations.

This is part of my ancestry from Polk County, NC, although I descend from a brother of Joseph Williams. There is a sign along the road in Polk Co., NC noting the fact that "Old Bill Williams" was born there. (When he was born, that area was part of Rutherford County, NC.)
