I came across a picture of the Colonel in some papers that my mother gave me. I don't believe that we are related to him. His grandson, Grover Williams was a friend of my mother's. She met him at a Church Camp in 1958 or 1959. He sent this picture to her in 1959. The picture is of Colonel Williams at the age of 114. He was still living then. He is dressed in a Military Jacket and Black Stetson Hat. It has his signature and it is written in a strong hand. Under the signature it states: Colonel Walter W. Williams Forage Master, Company C, Fifth Regiment, Hood's Brigade, CONFEDERATE STATES ARMY Born November 14, 1842, in Itawamba County, Mississippi Last rider of the Chisholm Trail. The bravest band of soldiers, That ever faced the fray. They fought for all that we hold dear, Our men who wore the Grey. The picture was printed by Grover Williams, from Williamsport, Indiana. My Williams family came from Tennessee. Absalom Moses Williams and Mary Jane Wilburn. I don't believe that any of them went to Mississippi, but Colonel Williams has a strong resemblance to my Great Grandmother Margaret Williams Warren. Who knows? If you know anything about the Colonel or Absalom Moses Williams family please contact me. Janet Scroggins Notify Administrator about this message?
