To follow up, the 1850 cenus shows the following:
First, the James Willard born Aug 18, 1778 is almost certainly the same person as the James Willard who appears in this census at Halifax, Windham County, Vermont, age 73, a farmer born MA.Living with him are his son James Jr. age 21, b VT and his wife Harriet (Stanclift) age 19, b Vt.By that time James Sr's wife Esther Lynde had died on October 19, 1849 in Halifax.
Second, The 1850 census for Sterling, Worcester, MA, for the other James Willard, shows him age 53, a laborer, b MA.His wife is Parthenia, age 42 b MA. Children listed with them are:
James A. age 27 b MA, laborer, Charles age 23 b MA, laborer, Lewis age 19 b MA laborer. These three were the children of this James and his first wife Sally or Sarah Carter. The other children listed were those of James and Parthenia:
Henry, age 11 b MA, Catherine, age 9 b MA, Annabell age 7 b MA, all three having attended school during the year.Living in the home also was Horatio Wight, age 30, b MA, a laborer.
This absolutely proves that the entry in the Willard Book on page 257 for James is incorrect. The Correct entry should be as follows:
523a.JAMES WILLARD (James, Isaac, Joseph, Benjamin, Simon), born at Sutton, MA, August 18, 1778; married Esther Lynde, daughter of Daniel Lynde Jr. and Sarah Newhall. He moved to Halifax, Vermont where he died February 12, 1867. Esther died October 19, 1849.Children:
i.Rebecca, b 1805, d July 1, 1822 Halifax
ii.Esther Lynde, b Mar 24, 1807, m Joel Thomas, went to Jefferson Co, NY
iii.Gratia, b Jan 26, 1811, d Oct 14, 1884
iv.Sally, b 1815
v.John, b 1817, m Virtue Mariah ca 1839 went to Will Co., IL
vi.James, b Feb 2, 1819, m Harriet Stanclift
vii.Abigail, b July 19, 1822, m Solomon Stanclift III
James who married Harriet Stanclift is my line. You can follow his family in Halifax through the succeeding census records.
Even though I have proved this point, I still want to know who the other James is who married Sally and Parthenia and what line he comes from.I suspect he is a fairly close cousin to my James because Solomon, Isaac and James, the sons of Isaac and Sarah (Whipple) Willard all lived in the Worcester, MA area. So, I hope somebody can find more on him.Or come up with ideas to track him down. Thanks.
