Hi Stephanie, My ancestor, David Wilkie/Wilkie born 1783/1784 Wilkes NC descends from Alexander Wilkey born c1745 married Susannah Mourning Stockton in Albemarle Co VA. David was in Cherokee NC 1850, Hall GA 1840. There was a Samuel Whelchel in Cherokee NC 1850 age 32. The Whelchel surname was often spelled Wilkey, and ended up spelled Wilkey permanently in some branches later. There was an Isaac Wilkins/Wilkey (wife Cassandra) in Haywood NC 1820 some of whose descendants were in Cherokee NC later (sons named Isaac, John, Alexander and David I believe). I think his descendants spelled the name Wilkins. Descendants of James Wilkey born 1740s, a presumed sibling of my Alexander Wilkey in VA/PA, spelled it Wilkins later I believe. My David Wilkey had no know brothers. And, the surname was spelled incorrectly as Wilkins as well sometimes prior to 1850. I believe David may descend from and Alexander Wilkie born 1706 Scotland who came to Monmouth Co NJ 1720s, although I have no paper trail other than the naming pattern. Descendants of that older Alexander Wilkie were in Rutherford NC and in northern GA and I think in SC. Maybe there are some hints here as to your Caroline Wilkie born 1825.
