Carleton, your John Wilks's parents Benjamin Wilks/Wilkes and Sarah Osborn moved from VA to Oglethorpe Co., GA, together with Benjamin's parents John Wilks Sr. & Elizabeth Mead, bef 21 Feb 1793, when Allen Killough and wife Margret sold John Wilks of same for $100 250 acres on Troublesom branch of Long Creek, being part of 650 acres granted said Allen Killough by his Honor the Governor in Council on 26 Apr 1787. John Wilks and wife Elizabeth sold the 250 acres to son Benjamin on 29 Oct 1796 for $100. (Oglethorpe Co. Deeds, Book A, pp. 111-113; Book C, pp. 30-31.)

Your John was born 8 Oct 1793, so yes, he was b. in GA. His marriage to Lydia Strong is recorded in Oglethorpe Co. I used to correspond with their descendant, Terry Chopel, living in East Texas.

I'd be interested to know your lineage from them to you. I don't post living people on the Net.
