Well, I am searching for information about my 3rd great grandfather, William R. Wilkinson, whose name was also spelled Wilkerson, so I thought I might see if we could be connected. According to the census, William R. Wilkinson was born c. 1816 in North Carolina. He married Mary Amanda DeWeese (1824-1851) in Mecklenburg Co., NC in 1841. Their firstborn child was born & died in 1842, and is buried at the Ramah Presbyterian Church, near Huntersville, Mecklenburg Co., NC. (Mary Amanda DeWeese's grandparents are also buried at this cemetery.) Sometime between 1842 and 1850, the Wilkinson family moved to Marion, McDowell County, NC, where they appear in the 1850 census. They are listed as: Wilkerson, William, 34 m, Boot Maker, NC Mary, 26 f NC William, 6 m NC Julia, 5 f NC Mary, 4 f NC John, 2 m NC Also in the household was her sister Adaline DeWeese, 22, and M. A. Pope, 22 m, a shoemaker. According to information I have from the DeWeese family history, after Mary Amanda's death, William married her sister Nancy Adeline. They were maried in Mecklenburg Co. in 1852, and had three children born in the 1850s "in South Carolina," I do not know where. The DeWeese information suggests that after Nancy Adeline's death in the 1860s, William may have married a third DeWeese sister, Rachel, the widow of Hiram Hall. I have no futher information on the Wilkinsons, other than that Mary Adeline Wilkinson (1846-1906) married John Andrew Field (1846-1883)in Gaston County, NC in 1865. They lived in the Coddle Creek section of Cabarrus County by 1870, and are buried at the Coddle Creek A. R. P. Church cemetery. Their firstborn son, Ernest Marion Field (1866-1904), was my great grandfather. I have found the following Wilkinsons on the 1850 census where the names, locations and occupations might suggest possible family relationships: 1850 census, Prosperity, Mecklenburg Co., NC. Wm. Wilkinson, 57, shoemaker Drucilla, 45 Esther, 22 James, 20, farms Joseph, 17, farms Frank, 14, farms George, 11 Mary, 9 Robert, 7 Leroy, 4 (Could he be the father of William R. in McDowell? It would have to be by an earlier wife.) 1850 census Iredell Co. D. Wilkinson, 33, shoemaker Lucy A., 27 Joseph H., 7 Wm. H., 5 Virginia A., 4 Jas. R. (?), 1 1850 Eastern Division, Pickens Co. SC: Claborn Wilkinson, 35, shoemaker Margaret, 35 Emily M. (?), 7 Robert A., 5 Wm. H., 1 month 1850, Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co. James G. Wilkinson, 75 (this actually could be 35 or 25), silversmith, $500 property, living in the household of Thomas Trotter, 48, silversmith, born in Virginia, $3000. On the same page is Neal Wilkinson, 21 a clerk, living in the house of Joshua Trotter, 48 (or 41) a coach (?) maker. Well, I hope this will connect with you, or someone. Best Regards, John Field Pankow Asheville, NC Notify Administrator about this message?
