Generation No. 3

5. MARY ELIZABETH3 RENNER M. HOWARD (MARGARET2 WILHOIT, WILLIAM C. "BILLY"1) was born June 17, 1857 in Greene Co., Tennessee, and died November 03, 1954 in Ladonia, Texas. She married LEANDER `LEE` BENSON HOWARD M. ELLIS December 23, 1876 in Ladonia, Fannin Co., Texas, son of WARNAL HOWARD and MALINDA SANDERS. He was born March 23, 1842 in Fayette Co., Alabama, and died June 13, 1920 in Chalk Mountain, Erath Co., Texas.

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH RENNER M. HOWARD:
Per Kay (Partain) Underwood Bowers, Mrs. RENNER lived behind the Underwood family in a little house.

Notes for LEANDER `LEE` BENSON HOWARD M. ELLIS:
Nancy Howard's Notes: According to a letter from Vera Flowers to Verna Howard, Leander Howard married in Cairo, MS Clay Co. However the marriage license is from Chickasaw Co. MS with date of Nov.28, 1867.

I have to assume the town of Cairo may well be in Clay Co MS now though it was probably in Chickasaw Co when this couple married. Clay Co didn't exist until after 1870. I had also been told B. J. Ellis was named Methelda or Martha Jane. With the B. J.. Ellis on the license, I'm inclined to think her name was Bethelda. There is a marker with Bethelda Jane Ellis placed near the grave of Leander B. Howard and his second wife, Mary E. Renner Howard in the Chalk Mountain Cemetery Erath Co. TX.

This marker states Bethelda Jane Ellis Howard is buried in Smyrna Cemetery near Dodd, TX Fannin Co. with birth and death years. This information was confirmed by a relative that had been to the Smyrna Cemetery and said she was buried in a marked grave. I feel sure someone wanted those of us that work on genealogy to know where Leander's first wife was buried. I can confirm the marriage of Leander and Mary
Elizabeth Renner as I have the actual license.

Leander fought in the Civil War and was wounded at least once. He enlisted March 3, 1862 at Palo Alto, Mississippi, by a Capt. S. R. Coopwood for period of 3 years. He was
a private in Company G, 35th Reg't Mississippi Infantry. He was not 16 years of age when he enlisted.

Records from National Archives indicate Leander was on a list of Prisoners of War captured and paroled by the U. S. forces in the battles of Iuka, Sept. 19; of Corinth on the 3rd and 4th, and of Hatchie on the 5th and 6th of October, 1862. He is on the list of Confederate prisoners forwarded to Columbus, KY from Corinth, MS Oct. 9, 1862. Was taken to Vicksburg Oct. 18, 1862 and exchanged Nov. 8, 1862. He is on the roll of prisoners paroled at Vicksburg, MS July 4, 1863. This doesn't indicate where he was
captured this second time. The records indicate he was captured a third time in Blakely, AL., April 9, 1865. The Prisoner of War roll shows Leander received at Ship Island, MS
April 15, and transferred to Vicksburg, MS on May 1, 1865. Exchange of prisoners was
at Camp Townsend May 6th, 1865. Prisoners were paroled.

L. B. Howard applied for his pension November 15, 1918. Unfortunately, he died before the pension started. His widow, Mary filed paperwork and received a $30 pension until
her death in 1954.

Leander taught school in Cottonwood, TX in Somervell Co around 1886 - 1887. It may be possible he taught school in Chalk Mountain after moving there late 1880s. He did
own a general merchandise store with Baxter P. Underwood in Chalk Mountain in the early 1900s. He served as postmaster of Chalk Mountain in 1894.
