If you check the original records in Philadelphia and the Oberlustadt records in Germany, you will find that the name was not corrupted as you suggest. It was Wildfang in Oberlustadt in 1732 and the Port of Philadelphia in 1734. The name evolved over a period of years. Various spelling are found in the Pendleton County Church records - Wilfang, Willfang, Wiltfang, Willfong, etc. Most of the family ended up with Wilfong, but you will still see these other spellings occasionally.
