Wiley 'brick walls' tumble
Nearly ten years ago when genetic genealogy was a very new resource to add to our tool box for solving family history ‘brick walls’ I enrolled my brother in the yDNA project for our surname. yDNA is a tiny bit of the total DNA molecules that is passed from father to son unchanged for many generations. That makes it useful in following paternal surnames.
Once we had results and a match we solved the unanswered question of our FKA’s parents and grandparents! Others in the family had never been able to find the answer even after 30+ years of work. Now with the development of additional genetic tests it looks as though we will be able to find our roots in Scotland before the family immigrated to America about 1750.
Genetic genealogy works in conjunction with traditional paper genealogy. But what a tool it is!!
THERE ARE MORE THAN 60 WILEY MEN HAVE TESTED FOR yDNA. Their results have divided them into separate groups. You can view the public page of results at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/wileyfamilydnastudy/default.aspx?section=ycolorizedhttp://www.familytreedna.com/public/wileyfamilydnastudy/default.aspx?section=ycolorized you will notice there is nothing on this page that gives the name or identification of the participant. Your privacy at FTDNA will not be publically divulged.
What is shown on this table is the kit number (not useful information to anyone visiting the website) and (hopefully!!!) the name of the first known Wiley ancestor. Two things will make this site more useful to any of us who have Wiley ancestors: (1) if every participant were to add the name of their FKA and (2) if we had more participants! The bigger the database the more useful.
All of this to let you know that FTDNA is having a sale on their kits. The sale has just begun and will end at mid-night on December 31, 2012. This gives you time to think about it and to ask questions. You can begin by going to http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Wileyhttp://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Wiley
If you have any questions please do ask me! As you can tell I am hugely positive about genetic testing for genealogy and have been involved with it for nearly ten years. If I don’t have the answer to your questions I will find someone who does.
