I am looking for informaiton on the Wilcox families of Ashe County NC. At some time the family surname was shortened to Wilcox. Early variants of the surname I found are Wilcoxon, Wilcoxen, and Wilcoxson. My Grandfather was Geleral Grant Wilcox (1869-1954). He married Cornelia Alice McGuire (1872-1933). Grant and Cornelia moved to Boone NC, with their younger children, around 1918. My mother was very young at the time of the move (b 1914). She, (Rosa Jean Wilcox Hodges) was the youngest of their ten children. Grant, Corneila and some of their children show up on the 1920 Boone census. I have little information on Grant's father and mother. His death certificate lists Martin Wilcox and Iva Wilson. This information came from his youngest son C.C. Wilcox. One on-line shource shows Rebecca Wilson as Grant's mother. Some on-line sources show Grant's father as Martin VanBuren Wilcox, Martin Wilcoxon, Martin Wilcoxson. It may have been Martin who shortened the name in my lineage. Some on-line informaiton I found show there is also a link between the Wilcox family and the Boone family. It seems one of Squire Boone's daughters married a Wilcox who may be one of my ancestors. Squire Boone was also Daniel Boone's father. I find this particularly interesting since I grew up in Boone NC and have visited one of Squire Boone's cabins. This cabin was moved to Boone many decades ago. Any help I can get on tracing my Ashe County Wilcox ancestry will be greatly appreciated. It seems my generation has little information/documentation on our lineage and county records are very scarce prior to 1900. Notify Administrator about this message?
